Every so often someone writes to me from Madrid, from Miami or from Buenos Aires with the same question: “I’m going to Colombia in December — is there enough time for my implants?” And behind that question there’s a bigger one almost nobody asks out loud: how do I choose
someone I don’t know, in another country, for something that will stay in my mouth for
twenty years?
It’s a reasonable question and this article is my attempt to answer it with criteria, not with advertising.
Why people come to Colombia
Colombian dentistry has a good name and it’s well earned. There’s solid training, there are specialists with real track records, and there’s access to the same technology and the same implant brands used in Europe or the United States. And yes, costs are different. But if that’s your only reason for coming, I’d suggest thinking twice. An implant treatment is a relationship spanning years, not a purchase. The right question isn’t where it’s cheapest, but where you’ll be well cared for and who will answer for your case afterwards.
What you can evaluate without traveling
Quite a bit more than people think.
Track record and training. Look for the professional’s full name, not just the clinic’s. How long they’ve been practicing, what they trained in specifically, and whether implantology is their focus or one of many services.
The content they produce. If a specialist publicly explains how they work, what criteria they decide by and why they choose one technique over another, that tells you more than any services page. You can evaluate how they think before meeting them.
Reviews, read with criteria. Look for patterns, not averages. And pay particular attention to reviews from patients who came from abroad: they mention things local ones don’t.
How and how quickly they reply. Write with a specific question about your case. Speed matters, but content matters more: if they reply with a question back, good sign. If they reply with a price, that tells you something else.
What implant brand they use. Ask for it in writing before traveling. It’s one of the few irreversible parts of the treatment and it should be a system also available in the country where you live.
How a remote assessment works
This is what, in practice, resolves the decision before you buy a ticket. What you can send: photographs of your mouth — front, each side, upper and lower — a panoramic X-ray or CT scan if you’ve already had one, the list of your medications and a summary of your dental history. What can be determined from that: whether your case is workable, what options you have in general terms, an estimated time range and whether the plan requires preparatory procedures. What can’t be determined remotely: the definitive plan. That requires a CT scan taken here, with the right quality and format, and it requires seeing you.

Choosing someone in another country for a treatment of this size is an act of trust, and that trust has to be built before you board the plane. I’ve spent nearly four decades in implantology and I’ve treated patients who came from several countries.
